Join the Mandela Remembrance Walk and Run from anywhere in the world this year

Covid-19 has put an end to all physical mass participation events this year - including the Mandela Remembrance Walk and Run. But while you may not be able to join us this year as usual in the shadow of the Union Buildings - where Madiba was inaugurated as South Africa’s first democratic President - you can still participate and be part of this special event in support of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

This year, everyone is welcome, and we invite you to join us - wherever you are in the world - to remember Madiba and to honor those we have lost to the Covid-19 global pandemic.

Whether you are super fit, unfit or your fitness levels are non-existent, register and complete the event entry forms, walk or run your chosen distance of 5km, 10kms or 21kms, and you will be awarded a unique virtual medal and certificate to confirm your participation in the 2020 Mandela Remembrance Walk and Run.

Barack Obama surprises Chicago high school students with free copies of new book ‘A Promised Land’ and a virtual visit

Chicago high school seniors received an early holiday surprise Monday when former President Barack Obama personally delivered the news that all high school students in Chicago Public Schools will receive free digital access to his new bestselling memoir, “A Promised Land.”

Obama announced the gift in a virtual assembly with CPS CEO Janice Jackson, who earlier in the day notified high school students and educators that a surprise special guest had “an exciting announcement that is especially for you.”

Obama added during the virtual assembly he plans to hold follow-up conversations about his memoir with CPS students, potentially through “a little book club” in the new year where he can answer questions.

COVID-19 keeps Truman Library closed

Months after it was expected to reopen, The Harry S. Truman Library and Museum in Independence remains closed due to COVID-19.

The 63-year-old space closed in July 2019 with hopes its year-long, $25 million remodel would bring visitors a more modern experience. Local leaders had also hoped to have the project finished in time to commemorate 75 years since President Franklin D. Roosevelt died, lifting then-Vice President Truman to Commander In Chief. However, in the midst of a growing pandemic the only experience visitors can get is online.

Today, The National Archives and Records Administration announced the library and museum would remain closed for public events through at least the end of the year, but possibly longer.

The Presidential Library's cinema club will be dedicated to the "human phenomenon"

On November 5, 2020, at 16:00, the next meeting of the Presidential library cinema club will be held. The program includes viewing and discussion of stories under the General title "human phenomenon" from the archive of the film studio"Lennauchfilm".

The event will be broadcast live on the Presidential Library's portal in the "Internet broadcasting" section, in the Presidential Library's cinema club group on the VKontakte social network and on the institution's YouTube channel.

For 80 years, the Leningrad film studio "Lennauchfilm" released more than four thousand films: scientific and educational. But they all relate in one way or another to a person, individuals and communities of people, their private lives and shared history.

A human being is the main subject of interest not only in science, but also in cinema. Translated from Greek, "phenomenon" means a phenomenon that can be imagined, realized, and studied. Even in ancient civilization, one can find examples of such an understanding of natural phenomena and the very "human phenomenon" - contradictory, complex, mysterious. This Greek term, but already in the meaning of "exceptional person", sounds directly in the names of some films, fragments of which will be seen by the participants of the film club.
The meeting of the film club will be held in the Multimedia Hall of the Presidential library.
