UNITED NATIONS DAY

"We, the peoples of the United Nations, determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, ...decided to join our efforts to achieve these goals "

75 years ago, on 24 October 1945, the Charter of the United Nations entered into force. United Nations Day was established at the United Nations General Assembly on 31 October 1947 to commemorate the anniversary of the event. It has been celebrated annually since 1948.

In the history of the 20th century, the creation of the UN was the highest achievement of international relations as a result of the victory over fascism and militarism. Its main goals are freedom, equality, peace and good for all people on the planet. This international intergovernmental organization serves as a recognized platform where all UN member states, regardless of their territorial size, economic development and political systems, have the right to express their views on a wide range of issues, as well as to participate in the settlement of international conflicts, disputes or problems. The UN is the only international institution with a truly universal reach and membership, as well as a broad agenda.

The UN Charter, ratified on October 24, 1945, is a historical international document, a kind of political and legal "tool" created by the mind of humanity. The special significance of this universal international Treaty is that the UN has declared as its main goal: "Save succeeding generations from the scourge of war."

In this context, with its universally recognized legitimacy, the United Nations is the cornerstone of the international security system. Today, no pressing international issue or conflict, whether it is arms reduction or control of nuclear energy, is resolved without the involvement of the organization.

According to official data, the Organization currently has 193 member states.

Kazakhstan joined the UN not only as a new member of the world community, but also as a state that takes an active position on the most pressing international issues of our time, standing at the forefront of the movement for nuclear disarmament. Many global initiatives to ensure regional and global security, put forward by the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan – Elbassy N. Nazarbayev from the rostrum of the UN General Assembly, were supported by the world community.

Recognizing the UN as an irreplaceable instrument of international relations, Kazakhstan strives to make its worthy contribution to solving common problems of humanity through the organization.

Numerous high-level meetings have played a positive role in the development of bilateral relations. Since 1992, the First President of Kazakhstan  Nursultan Nazarbayev has made more than 10 official visits to the UN headquarters in New York and has spoken at high-level political debates. It should also be noted that Kazakhstan's cooperation with the UN has never been one-sided. So, in different years, UN Secretaries-General Kofi Annan, Ban Ki-moon and Antonio Guterres have paid official visits to Kazakhstan.

The Library of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan – Elbassy contains archival documents that reveal the role of our country and Elbassy N. Nazarbayev in the activities of the UN, strengthening and preserving security in the world.

In addition, in the Library of Elbassy, the reader can find the works of the first Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the UN A. Arystanbekova "United Nations and Kazakhstan" and "Kazakhstan in the UN: history and prospects"; as well as a reference book "Basic facts about the United Nations", which provides complete information about the activities and organizational structure of the UN; a collection of reports and documents " the Agenda for development: 1995 and other UN documents on this topic»; book by S. Demin "In the crooked corridors of the UN",  in which the author tells how in Soviet times, came to serve in the UN as it worked in the Soviet Union, during and after its collapse, during the period of pseudo-capitalist development of Russia; the collection of papers "International organizations of the UN system"; a course of lectures by diplomat V.F.Zaemsky "UN and peacekeeping".

It is also worth noting that the appointment of K. Tokayev to the post of UN Deputy Secretary-General (March 2011-October 2013) was a recognition of the international authority of Kazakhstan. The First President of Kazakhstan N. Nazarbayev in his article "Abai's Spiritual Testament" noted: "Working with me from the first days of our independence, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev set an example of high citizenship and honest, responsible service, I took into account the solid professional baggage he accumulated: his knowledge of both his own country and the outside world, his knowledge of languages and cultures of the East and West, his work as Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and, of course, his diplomatic services in protecting the country's interests and positioning Kazakhstan in the global political process. At the same time, I believed in his ability to find a harmonious balance between the ideals of national unity and commitment to universal values."

A significant event in the history of bilateral cooperation was the election of Kazakhstan as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. Membership in the main UN body for peace and security has allowed Kazakhstan to establish itself as an active and responsible international player and make a significant contribution to strengthening peace and security.

Six principal organs constitute the United Nations system: the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Trusteeship Council, the International Court of Justice and the United Nations Secretariat. They have the primary responsibility for the maintenance of peace on Earth.

Today, within or under the auspices of the UN, there are many international organizations and specialized agencies, functional and regional commissions, training institutes, and a system of programs and funds for development assistance.

Active participation in the work of the UN is the development of the country in political, economic, social, humanitarian and other important areas of activity. In Kazakhstan, the United Nations system is represented by 15 organizations. Their activities are aimed at providing broad technical and advisory assistance to our country. Participation in the UN is one of the priorities of Kazakhstan's foreign policy. Our country, thanks to its active and balanced position, has made its contribution to the cause of peace, security and development, as well as to the functional and structural modernization of the UN.

Thanks to the activities of the United Nations, planet Earth has enjoyed relative peace for 75 years. Today, the UN provides food and aid to 87 million people in 83 countries. It assists and protects 82.5 million refugees and victims of war, famine and persecution. It carries out more than 40 political missions and operations with 95,000 peacekeepers as part of maintaining peace. It fights extreme poverty by helping to improve the living conditions of more than 1 billion people. It coordinates the collection of $ 18 billion in humanitarian aid for 117 million people.

Experts note that in the 75 years of its existence, the UN has not tilted towards a unipolar world. The reason for this is that it is a collective responsibility organization that respects the interests of many. In the twenty-first century, the United Nations remains absolutely essential and irreplaceable for humanity.
