The Library of Elbasy continues the cycle of materials within the framework of the information project "Uly Dala Tarlandary", dedicated to the ideas of success, competitiveness and the cult of knowledge on the example of the finalists of the republican contest "100 new personalities of Kazakhstan". A large-scale exhibition about the winners of this project, initiated by the First President of Kazakhstan N. A. Nazarbayev, has been opened in the new building of the Museum of the Library of Elbasy. Today we will tell you about the finalist of 2019, a young scientist Serik Nurkenov.
"Rapid industrial development around the world inevitably damages the environment. Therefore, the greater the development, the more reverent the attitude towards nature should be. Kazakhstan, developing its industry, strives to protect and improve its own environmental situation as much as possible. For this purpose, a new draft of the Environmental Code has been created, which is currently being implemented by the team of our Center", Serik Nurkenov, Deputy Head of the Bureau of Best Available Technologies (BAT) of the International Center for Green Technologies and Investment Projects, shares with us.
Serik Nurkenov, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, PhD in Physics, became widely known after participating in the large-scale project "100 new personalities of Kazakhstan". He is the author and developer of new thermally stable nano-coatings based on beryllium, which are used in nuclear medicine, space and nuclear energy.
The scientific community highly appreciated the experience of using open sources of ionizing radiation for the purpose of early diagnosis of oncological, cardiological and neurological diseases, thanks to which thousands of Kazakhstani citizens discovered "neoplasms" of dangerous diseases at an early stage.
After graduating with honors in 2003 from the Physics and Mathematics Department of Semipalatinsk Shakarim State University, Serik Nurkenov continued his studies at L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian University. Life in the capital opened up new ways of development for the young scientist – he entered the University of Chicago under the Bolashak program.
A valuable experience for Serik Nurkenov was working in the Department of Nuclear Medicine of the Republican Diagnostic Center in Nur-Sultan, where he studied medical physics. The scientist developed his knowledge in one of the most complex and popular areas of science during internships in Germany, Slovakia, Austria, and Italy.
A new round in Serik Nurkenov's scientific activity began with his work for the International Center for Green Technologies and Investment Projects. Currently, as the deputy head of the Bureau of Best Available Technologies (BAT), S. Nurkenov is engaged in the implementation of the draft new version of the Environmental Code, which was signed by the President of Kazakhstan earlier this year.
"Our team is engaged in the transition of the Kazakhstan industry to the principles of the best available technologies. Enterprises should reduce their emissions by modernizing their production. In Europe, reforms in this area have been underway for 30 years, and they have already achieved amazing results. Kazakhstan is on the way to this goal. My task is to conduct explanatory work among industrial enterprises in the regions. We conduct a comprehensive technological audit to assess the current state of the enterprise. This is necessary for the state to know and understand the real situation. From 2025, on the entry into force of the Environmental Code, enterprises will start implementing and modernizing new technologies and will show clear deadlines for achieving the goals set in the European Union", says Serik Nurkenov.
It is important to understand, says the scientist, that environmental protection begins in the family. Even before school, children should understand the dangers of uncontrolled consumption of water, paper, and plastic. And it is necessary to strengthen environmental education in the school. However, according to Serik Nurkenov, the cases of beating seals show that it would be worth more often to conduct explanatory work for the adult generation.
"Ecological culture will not arise in the people in one day or even in one year. This value should be formed in the minds of every citizen from an early age. Addressing people, I urge them to take care of our surrounding world. To begin, abandon the one-use plastic bags, replacing them with ordinary fabric grocery bags. I am sure that in a short time you will learn to understand how much the safety of our ecology depends on your day-to-day decision", S. Nurkenov emphasizes.
