95 years ago, on April 1, 1925, the famous Kazakh composer and conductor, Honored Artist of the Kazakh SSR, People's Artist of the Kazakh SSR, People's Artist of the USSR Nurgisa Atabaevich Tlendiev was born. N. Tlendiev is the author of more than 500 musical works in various genres: songs, kuis, romances, overtures, poems, cantataopera, ballet, etc.
He was born and raised in the village of Shilikemer, now the village of Nurgisa Tlendiev of Ili district, Almaty region. The boy's father Atabay played the dombra well and was an expert in Kazakh folk songs. His mother Salih also loved music, singing and even playing the accordion. It is not surprising that the boy learned to play the dombra at an early age. Soon his parents gave him a piano, and his mother began to teach him to read music. This proved to be a fateful decision for Nurgisa.
In 1933, a boy met with Akhmet Zhubanov. One day he passed Nurgisa's house and heard the sounds of dombra. Zhubanov wondered who was playing the dombra so masterfully? After seeing a six-year-old child, the composer asked his mother for permission to listen to his son play again. Ahmet Kuanovich listened to the boy's playing for a long time and finally strongly advised him to go to a music school. This advice was akin to recognizing the talent of a six-year-old child. In the same year, the boy entered the school.
Nurgisa Tlendiev carried his friendship with Akhmet Zhubanov and gratitude to him through his entire life. Nurgisa Atabayevich said about him: "Zhubanov taught me everything: to love and understand folk and classical music, taught me to work and find joy from creativity, taught me to love life in all its manifestations. I owe him what I have become." In school, the skill of N. Tlendiev only grew. At the age of twelve, he was appointed concertmaster of the orchestra, at the age of fourteen – assisted the main conductor of the orchestra, learning from Makes Bokeikhanov, a student of Salauatkerei. After graduation, Akhmet Zhubanov ordered and presented a dombra to his student for his success in creative work.
In 1943, N. Tlendiev volunteered to go to the front. From 1943 to May 9, 1945, he went from the battle of Kursk to the storming of Berlin and was wounded several times in the battles. After the end of the war, he was awarded the medals "For bravery", "For the capture of Berlin" and "For Victory in the Great Patriotic War".
After demobilization, N. Tlendiev studied at the Faculty of folk instruments of the Kazakh State Conservatory named after Kurmangazy. After graduation, Nurgisa went to Moscow to study at the Conservatory, becoming the first Kazakh to open the doors of this school. In 1952, he graduated from the conducting faculty of the Moscow Conservatory, and trained at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow.
In 1953-1961, he was the chief conductor of the Kazakh Opera and Ballet Theater named after Abai. During his work in the theater, the audience enjoyed his works: the ballet-poem "Orteke" (1957), the ballet "Dear friendship" (1958) and the cantata "My Kazakhstan" (1959). For these works, he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and got the title of Honored Artist of the Kazakh SSR.
From 1961 to 1964, Nurgisa Atabaevich held the position of chief conductor of the Kazakh State Academic Folk Instruments Orchestra named after Kurmangazy. At the same time, he held the position of Artistic Director of the orchestra. This was one of the most fruitful periods of his career. Together with the Uyghur composer Kuddus Kuzhamyarov, he wrote the opera "The golden mountains", also he wrote orchestral poems "Ata tolǵaý", overtures "Halyq qýanyshy" and "Qaırat".
Then N. Tlendiev was the Director of the Opera and Ballet Theater named after Abai, and from 1968 to 1981 – the chief editor of the music editorial office of the film studio "Kazakhfilm". He wrote music for the animated film "Why a swallow has a split tail", the films "Melon", "Red Yurt", "Chase in the steppe", "Journey to childhood", "Blue route", "My Brother", "Hey, you cowboys!", "Alpamys goes to school". Especially for the famous film "Kyz-Zhibek", the composer wrote the kui "Akku". Nurgisa Tlendiev also acted as the composer of the cult Kazakh film "My name is Kozha".
Nurgisa Atabaevich worked with many outstanding poets and writers of his time. Tumanbay Moldagaliev, Kadyr Myrzaliev, Muzafar Alimbayev, wrote the lyrics to his songs. Tlendiev often hosted authors at home. His collaboration with Mukagali Makatayev was particularly fruitful. Thirty days of continuous work, they wrote thirty-two songs, among them such famous songs as "Sarjaılaý», «Darıǵa, dombyramdy bershі maǵan», «Sálem saǵan Jetіsý», «Oshaq otyń sónbesіn», «Men senі іzdedіm" and others.
In 1981-1998, he was the chief conductor and Artistic Director of the Kazakh State Folklore and Ethnographic orchestra of folk musical instruments "Otrar Sazy", organized by himself. This orchestra was very different from the ones Nurgisa led before. It was founded on the basis of an ensemble created by ethnographer Bolat Sarybayev. In this orchestra, instead of the usual string and keyboard instruments, unique musical culture instruments of medieval Otyrar were used: sazsyrnai, sybyzgy and others. The orchestra became a laureate of the World Festival of Youth and Students, a laureate of the Lenin Komsomol Prize, a laureate of the International Fund named after Zhambyl. Nurgisa Tlendiev led this orchestra until the end of his life. After the composer's death, the Otrar Sazy orchestra was named after Nurgisa Tlendiev.
Nurgisa Atabaevich Tlendiev died on October 15, 1998. Shortly before his death, N. Tlendiev was awarded the Order "Halyq Qaharmany" by the First President of Kazakhstan N. Nazarbayev. This was a worthy recognition of his services to the Kazakh art.
The composer's name is immortalized in the names of music schools, museums, and streets. Bronze busts and documentaries were made in honor of him. One of the streets of the capital bears his name. In May 2014, a museum was opened in Tlendiev 's apartment in Almaty, where he has lived since 1979.
