Malik Gabdullin was born on November 15, 1915, in Koysalgan, now it is the Zerendinsky district of Akmola region. From an early age, his father taught him Arabic writing. From 1924 to 1931, Malik studied at the seven-year Kazakh school in Kokshetau. Once a group of writers arrived in the city for a conference, among which was a Kazakh poet and writer Sabit Mukanov. The delegation of guests visited the school where young Gabdullin studied. Malik plucked up his courage to approach the writer. He asked for his support to continue his studies in Almaty. This is how two prominent figures of the Kazakh people met. Later, starting from the age of 14, Gabdullin lived and was raised in the family of Sabit Mukanov.
In 1935, Gabdullin graduated from the Abai Kazakh pedagogical Institute. He worked as a deputy editor of the newspaper "Kazakhstan pioneer", a research associate of the Institute of literature and language of the KazFAN of the USSR, in 1938-1946 he studied at the graduate school of KazPI named after Abai.
From the beginning to the end of the Great Patriotic War, Malik Gabdullin served in the famous Panfilov guards division. Initially, Gabdullin fought as a political officer of a troop of machine gunners of the 1075th rifle regiment. He took an active part in the battle of Moscow.
From 1944 to 1946, Gabdullin worked as the head of the agitation department in the Political administration of the 1st Baltic front. He took part in the liberation of the Belorussian SSR, the Baltic states, and the battles in East Prussia. Being directly in active units, he carried out a lot of agitation work, especially among fighters of non-Russian nationality, mobilizing them to carry out combat missions.
After returning from the war, Malik Gabdullin engaged in scientific and educational activities. He worked as Director of the Institute of literature and linguistics of the Kazakh SSR, Rector of Abai KazPI, head of the folklore department of the Institute of literature and art named after M. O. Auezov of the Kazakh SSR. Twice he was a Deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR. In his research, Malik Gabdullin studied the heroic epic, folk songs, aitys, fairy tales, proverbs and sayings of the Kazakh people.
For the deep scientific work "Kazakh epic "Koblandy Batyr" in 1947, M. Gabdullin was awarded the degree of Candidate of philological sciences, and in 1959, after the publication of the literary work "Oral poetic creativity of the Kazakh people", he received the degree of Doctor of philology. In 1961, he became a full member of the Academy of pedagogical sciences of the USSR. Malik Gabdullin participated in the preparation and publication of a multi-volume history of Kazakh literature. In 1972, his scientific work "Kazakh heroic epic" was awarded the Chokan Valikhanov Prize.
In 1943, Malik Gabdullin was awarded the Gold Star Medal of the Hero of the Soviet Union and the Lenin Order. In addition, he was awarded orders of the Red Banner, the Patriotic War of the 1st degree, the Red Star, medals of the USSR and the Honorary Diploma of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR.
"It was the bloodiest, most brutal war in the history of mankind, which claimed the lives of tens of millions of people. Among the dead were Kazakhstanis. Of the total population of the Republic of six million, 20% went to the war fronts. Half of them never returned. The veterans we have and those who passed away paved the way for our happiness, our independence, and the blue sky of our present day. By the example of such heroes as Baurzhan Momyshuly, Talgat Bigeldinov, Manshuk Mametova, Aliya Moldagulova, Malik Gabdullin and many other people, it is necessary to educate the younger generation," said the First President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev.
The works of a prominent Kazakh scientist and teacher, writer, honored scientist of the Kazakh SSR are presented in the Library of Elbassy. Among them, M. Gabdullin’s textbook for universities "Oral folk art of the Kazakh people", which has not lost its relevance and is actively used by teachers. As well as his textbook for grades 8-9 "Kazakh literature", a guide "For parents about parenting". Memories of the Hero of the Soviet Union Gabdullin about the war were included in his work "Frontline essays".
Serik Negimov's research work "Malik Gabdullin" is dedicated to the life and work of the writer. In this book, for the first time, documents of the Central state archive of the Republic of Kazakhstan were published: the protocol of defense of the thesis, correspondence with prominent personalities, letters in post-graduate years, essays and poems by Malik Gabdullin. Another edition of S. Negimov album-book "Málіk Ǵabdýllın – qazaqtyń oqjetpesі" is also in the book collection of the Library.
Among the works about Malik Gabdullin are also the works of the famous Kazakh writer, front-line poet, World War II veteran Azilkhan Nurshaikhov. In the ten-volume collection of his works dedicated to all the soldiers-heroes of the Great Patriotic War, there is a story-monologue "Toǵyz tolǵaý", dedicated to the heroism of Malik Gabdullin.
