In 1994, the UNESCO Cluster Office opened in Almaty, covering the territories of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. There are 6 departments, more than 30 associated schools and more than 50 UNESCO Clubs operating successfully in the country.
An important aspect of cooperation between Kazakhstan and UNESCO was the inclusion in the international register of names of outstanding figures and memorable events in the history of the ethnic group in the framework of the project "Calendar of memorable dates of humanity". Over the years, many commemorative events have been held under the auspices of UNESCO.
Thanks to the activities of Elbassy, the names of outstanding figures and historical figures of Kazakhstan are immortalized in the annals of world history. The recognition by UNESCO of the cultural and natural values of our country is one of the factors in raising international awareness of the heritage of Kazakhstan, which makes a huge contribution to the country's entry into the world tourist map.
"The noble ideals of UNESCO, its active position in the process of socio-economic transformations have earned well-deserved respect all over the world and find a lively response and warm support in Kazakhstan, which is moving towards creating a new democratic society", N. The historical decisions of Elbassy in the implementation of UNESCO programs and projects consolidate the spiritual and moral potential of the Kazakh people, preserving and strengthening the national code, monuments of cultural and natural heritage for the harmonious development of our country today and for the benefit of future generations of Kazakhstan.
One of the indicators of international recognition of N. A. Nazarbayev is the awarding the UNESCO prize to Nazarbayev Intellectual schools (NIS), created on the personal initiative of Elbassy.
