EXPERT OPINION. THE SITUATION ON THE KOREAN PENINSULA AND THE ROLE OF KAZAKHSTAN IN THE NON-PROLIFERATION OF NUCLEAR WEAPON

On October 24 this year, Deputy Director of the Library of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan – Elbassy Gulzat Kobenova and leading researcher of the service of geopolitics and regional studies Zhansaya Zhabina took part in the international round table "the Situation on the Korean Peninsula and the role of Kazakhstan in the non-proliferation of nuclear weapon". The event was organized by the Kazakhstan Institute for strategic studies (KazISS) under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Republic of Kazakhstan to discuss the current situation on the Korean Peninsula, the problems of denuclearization, as well as the consideration and analysis of Kazakhstan's anti-nuclear policy and its experience in disarmament.

The round table was attended by representatives of the Ministry of foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, foreign diplomatic representations and diplomatic missions of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the expert community.

Opening the meeting, Director of KazISS Zarema Shaukenova outlined significant changes in the settlement of the situation on the Korean Peninsula and noted the positive experience of Kazakhstan as a leader of the anti-nuclear world.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea to the Republic of Kazakhstan Kim Desik in his speech paid attention to the main aspects and directions of the crisis settlement process on the Korean Peninsula.

Chairman of the international information Committee of the MFA of Kazakhstan Talgat Zhumagulov, welcoming the guests and participants of the round table, stressed that Kazakhstan supports the process of settlement of the situation on the Korean Peninsula through dialogue and negotiations and is ready to provide its assistance as a state with experience in the disarmament process.

During the panel sessions, speakers and participants of the round table discussed the history of the crisis on the Korean Peninsula, the stages of formation and development of the nuclear problem of the Peninsula. The analysis of Kazakhstan's model of disarmament and possible implementation of Kazakhstan's experience in the settlement of problems on the Korean Peninsula was also carried out.

- Noting the positive developments in the resolution of the crisis on the Korean Peninsula, it should be noted that only the political will of the leadership of North and South Korea, built on strengthening mutual trust and systemic dialogue, the provision of security guarantees by the nuclear powers will contribute to the progress of the process.
