DEDICATED TO THE DAY OF THE FIRST PRESIDENT AND INDEPENDENCE DAY OF THE REPUBLIC OF KAZAKHSTAN

The virtual exhibition of one item “Commemorative coin” continues a series of events dedicated to the Day of the First President and the Independence Day of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The collection of numismatics occupies a worthy place in the Museum collection of the Elbasy Library. Among the commemorative coins, there are interesting samples that deserve especial attention. Thus, the main object of the exhibition is a commemorative coin with a face value of 20 tenge, dedicated to the fifth anniversary of Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan. It is a numismatic rarity, having its own history of production and replication.

In the year of Kazakhstan’s Independence fifth anniversary celebration, a well-known “Independence Monument” was opened in Almaty on the Republic square, the prototype of which was the famous “Golden man”. The mint of the National Bank of the Republic of Kazakhstan issued a commemorative 20 tenge coin dedicated to this anniversary (artist: V. P. Ivzhenko; sculptors: V. P. Ivzhenko, A. P. Zolotukhin).

The peculiarity of the coin is that the image of the Independence monument on the coin’s reverse is slightly different from the monument itself. The warrior on the coin is depicted with his right hand outstretched, while in the monument itself, a bird is sitting on the warrior’s right hand.

How did the discrepancy in the images of the warrior occur? The fact is that the process of preparing the monument and the coin had proceeded pari passu. The coin was minted according to the monument’s preliminary sketch, and at the time when the last changes were made to the sketch of the monument, the Mint already issued 20 thousand copies of coins. Since there were a lot of manufactured coins and there was no fault of the Mint employees in the incident, the finished products were not destroyed. Another 80 thousand copies of commemorative coins were minted in accordance with the monument’s new design.

Thus, there are currently two types of commemorative coins dedicated to the fifth anniversary of Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The first issue of this coin acquired a special numismatic value.

The modern history of Kazakhstan is full of events and dates filled not only with socio-political content, but also with interesting historical and cultural characteristics. The Museum collection of the Elbasy Library fills the palette of images with new colors, creating a large-scale picture of the transformations of the Independence period. The “History of one item” project continues.
