Omasheva, T. Suleimenova, K. Sarekenova, V. Nikonova, M. Tatimova, E. Toleubaev, A. Abdramanova, S. Ibrahimova, M. Kystaubaev, I. Orazbaeva, T. Spaeva, A. Zhunisova, T. Adam-Yusupova, V.Kolbasy, Sh. Zhukisheva, N. Vakhitova, T. Yskakova, V. Stringi, G. Bibatyrova.
"...I came to the Karaganda metallurgical plant in the early 1960s, started as a ladleman, like Nursultan Abishevich, and then worked as a blast-furnace man. The work was hard, "hot" - metal went at 1200-1300 C, slag - at 1600-1800 C, and we drank one and a half or two buckets of water. It was very dangerous, you could get burned jumping over channels of flowing lava. If water fell on the hot metal, nothing happened, and if the hot metal came into contact with something cold, there was an explosion. There were a lot of accidents. Responsibility, danger and hard physical work develop and harden the character", - says Tuleutai Suleimenov, a metallurgical engineer, diplomat, statesman, the first Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, an associate of Elbassy, a colleague at the Karaganda metallurgical combine, a fellow student of N. Nazarbayev at the Karaganda Polytechnic Institute.
According to T. Suleimenov, they met for the first time with the future First President at the blast furnace, which was launched on July 3, 1960, and they were participants of the pill heat, which announced that Kazakhstan independently melts cast iron.
"Nursultan Abishevich was an activist, stood out among the others. Soon, he was elected Secretary of the party bureau of the domain shop, - an associate of Elbassy shares his memories. – ... We worked hand in hand, working closely together and supporting each other. Our joint political and social activities united us. We held various activities – exhibitions, meetings, and participated in the meetings. Life was in full swing. The future President, then just my friend and colleague, spoke at meetings, was a skilled speaker, had authority and respect in the team. His bright, multi-faceted personality was revealed not only in his party activities. He was always able to attract the attention of others, was the soul of our youth company: he sang, danced, told fascinating stories, often joked. He knew how to listen well and most importantly - to hear people. He always tried to help those who were in a difficult situation. He responsibly approached everything he undertook. We respected and now respect each other for friendliness, loyalty, support. This became the basis of a strong friendship, which has continued to this day, despite the fact that more than 50 years have passed."
Kabidolla Sarekenov – a metallurgist, scientist, doctor of technical sciences, classmate and friend of Elbassy, studied with him in 1958-1960 in the city of Dneprodzerzhinsk. "I remember how in school after classes we all hurried to the movies, some to a city park on a date. And Nursultan preferred to read books. To all my suggestions, he answered clearly: "I don't feel like walking. I'd rather study." But when it came to public works, Nursultan didn’t have to be agitated," he recalls.
An honorary metallurgist, a veteran of the Karaganda metallurgical plant, a fellow student of N. Nazarbayev at metallurgical faculty of the technical college Viktor Nikonov tells: "Nursultan Nazarbayev somehow stood out among us with a kind attitude towards everyone, external calmness, inner confidence, and the fact that he was not afraid of a large audience and openly expressed his opinion. Among peers who had different educational backgrounds, the future President was distinguished by erudition, political knowledge, excellent memory, and excellent knowledge of his native and Russian languages."
From the memoirs of Ermek Toleubaev - a veteran of the Karaganda metallurgical plant, an honorary citizen of the city of Temirtau, a fellow student of Elbassy, readers can learn that in his student years, N. Nazarbayev not only studied well and was an activist, but also engaged in free-style wrestling. "Nursultan told jokes, made fun of us, sang songs with friends, played the dombra perfectly. Nursultan Abishevich was a natural speaker, erudite, competent young man. He often helped us out at seminars, when it was necessary to retell lectures on philosophy, on scientific communism, on dialectical materialism. We did it with difficulty, and Nursultan could talk for hours about the history of the universe. The traits of a true leader appeared in his youth. I remember we were drawn to him like a magnet. He had a sincere good-natured smile," is recorded in his memoirs.
The stories of the years of student and working youth of Elbassy are illustrated by archival documents, newspaper articles and photos.
